A Small River City
Asphalt paving in Utica means working in one of the smallest cities in the area. Utica covers about 1.78 square miles, had 5,245 residents and 2,651 housing units at the 2020 census, and sits at about 650 feet of elevation, low ground compared with the hills to the west. The Clinton River runs through the center of the city on its way to Lake St. Clair.
Platted in 1829
Joseph Stead platted the town in 1829 as Harlow. It was also called Hog's Hollow and McDougalville before settlers from New York named it Utica. Fires in 1905 and 1906 destroyed most of the older buildings, so few structures predate 1906. By the 1940s Utica was a dairy and truck-garden center that shipped rhubarb; auto plants arrived in nearby Sterling and Shelby townships in the 1950s, and the housing that followed shaped much of the city.
Low ground, wet base
Neighborhoods near the river sit on lower ground that can stay wet. A driveway that holds water through a thaw cracks and sinks. We probe the subgrade, replace soft material, and set grades so water leaves the surface toward the street.
County roads
Utica is in Macomb County, so county road approaches fall under Macomb County rather than the Oakland County road commission. City streets are the city's. We check which applies before approach work.
Small lots, careful work
Many Utica lots are compact, with short drives and tight side yards. We plan access and staging to fit and keep the street open as much as possible.
Upkeep
For drives that are still sound, fall crack sealing and a sealcoat every few years are the cheapest protection against roughly 120 freezing days a year in the region.
Costs
National guides list pothole repair at about $100 to $400, hot-mix patches at about $2 to $5 per square foot, and new driveways at roughly $5 to $12 or more per square foot. Your written quote is the price.
Timing
Near the river, ground can stay soft into late spring. We probe the subgrade before paving day and move the date if it is not ready.
Repairs first
If your drive is mostly sound with a few failed spots, cutting those out and patching with hot mix, then sealing, can buy years before replacement.
Short drives, careful finish
Many Utica drives are short and meet a sidewalk and city street within a few feet of the garage. That leaves little room to fix grade, so each joint has to be right: flush at the garage slab, flush at the walk, and sloped so water runs to the street. We hand-finish those joints where the roller cannot reach.
What a quote includes
Removal, base depth, asphalt thickness, joints and any approach work, each listed so you can compare bids.
Concrete strips
Some older homes have broken concrete ribbon strips instead of a full drive. We remove them and pave a full-width asphalt drive on a proper base.
Flood-prone streets
Because the Clinton River runs through the middle of town, a few streets see high water after heavy rain. On those lots we raise the base where we can and make sure the drive sheds water toward the street rather than holding it.

Utica Questions
Does being near the river affect my driveway?
Lower ground can stay wet. We probe the base and set grades so water drains off.
Who controls county road approaches in Utica?
Macomb County, since Utica is in Macomb. City streets are the city's.
Can you work on a short, tight driveway?
Yes. We plan equipment and staging to fit.
When is the best time for crack sealing?
Late summer and fall.
Can you wait until the ground is dry?
Yes. We would rather move the date than pave on soft subgrade.
Is patching worth it on an older drive?
If failures are limited and the rest is sound, yes.
Can you replace concrete ribbon strips?
Yes, with full removal and a new base for a full-width asphalt drive.
My street floods sometimes. Does that change the job?
We build the base to handle wet conditions and set grade to shed water.
