Asphalt Paving in Shelby Township, MI

Across the County Line

Asphalt paving in Shelby Township means crossing Dequindre Road into Macomb County. The township borders Rochester Hills on the east, and it is big: 79,408 residents at the 2020 census, up from 73,804 in 2010, on about 35 square miles. It was set off by the Michigan Territorial Legislature in 1827 and once included what is now Sterling Heights.

Different county, different road agency

On the Oakland County side, county roads are handled by the Road Commission for Oakland County. In Shelby Township, county roads fall under Macomb County. If your project involves an approach or culvert at a county road, the permit comes from Macomb County, not Oakland. We confirm road ownership for your address before scheduling.

The Clinton River

The Clinton River drains the township on its way to Lake St. Clair. Riverbend Park, a 600-acre public park, has its main entrance at 22 Mile and Shelby Road, and the 23.7-mile Macomb Orchard Trail runs partly through the township. Homes near the river or its tributaries can sit on wetter ground, and we plan base and drainage for it.

Growing subdivisions

Shelby's growth has brought many newer subdivisions alongside older homes. Newer drives mostly need crack sealing and their first sealcoat; older ones may be ready for replacement. Widening is a common request in growing households, and the new strip has to be built to the same depth as the existing drive.

Cider mill country

Yates Cider Mill and Yates Park sit partly in Shelby, mostly in Rochester Hills and Rochester, and the area still has orchards and farm stands. Rural parcels with gravel drives and roadside ditches are part of the mix.

Weather

The region sees roughly 120 freezing days a year. Fall crack sealing is the best protection for any existing drive.

Costs

National guides put a new asphalt driveway at roughly $5 to $12 or more per square foot (HomeGuide) and $7 to $15 (Angi), with Angi's average job near $4,900. Sealcoating runs about $1 to $2 per square foot. Your written quote is the price.

Timing

We pave from late spring into early fall and seal cracks in late summer and fall. New driveways should cure several months before their first sealcoat.

Edges and lawns

In newer subdivisions, topsoil along the driveway edge is often thin. After paving, building soil up against the edge and seeding it gives the asphalt support so plows and tires do not break it off.

Older parcels and ditches

Between the subdivisions, Shelby still has older homes on larger parcels along county roads with roadside ditches. Those drives cross a culvert at the road. A rusted or crushed culvert sends water against the approach and softens the base, so we check it and include replacement in the quote if needed, with Macomb County's requirements in mind.

Repair or replace

HomeGuide suggests repairing when less than about a quarter of the surface is damaged and the base is stable, and replacing when cracking covers most of the surface or potholes keep returning. We tell you which applies.

Orchards and trails

Properties near the Macomb Orchard Trail and the cider mills see weekend traffic in the fall. We schedule around that on nearby roads.

Shelby Township Questions

Who issues approach permits in Shelby Township?

For county roads, Macomb County rather than Oakland. We check road ownership for your address.

Can you widen my driveway?

Yes, built to full depth and tied in with a saw-cut joint.

Do you pave gravel drives on rural parcels?

Yes, reusing firm stone as base where it tests well.

When should a new driveway first be sealed?

After it cures for several months, usually after the first year.

Do you work on both sides of Dequindre?

Yes, in Rochester Hills on the Oakland side and Shelby Township on the Macomb side.

Can you replace my culvert at the road?

Yes, as part of approach work, planned with the county's requirements in mind.

How do I know if my Shelby driveway needs replacing?

Widespread alligator cracking, potholes that return each spring, sinking near the garage or water that sits after rain all point to base failure. We check at the estimate.
