Paving in Lake Country
Asphalt paving in Orion Township happens in lake country. The township has 42 lakes larger than five acres, and about 7 percent of its 35.9 square miles is water. It had 38,206 residents at the 2020 census. Ground rises and falls between the lakes, so driveways here run uphill, downhill and along slopes more often than not.
Drainage on rolling lots
On hilly lots, water runs down the drive and collects at the low point. If the bottom of the driveway is also where it meets the road, the approach and culvert take a beating. We shape the surface to shed water along the way, support the edges, and check culverts at the road.
Near the water
Many homes back onto a lake or sit near one. We keep sealer and asphalt materials on the driveway, protect drains and shorelines, and stabilize disturbed soil after work so sediment stays out of the water.
Gravel lanes
Older parcels and lake properties often have gravel lanes. Paving one involves regrading, reusing firm stone, adding aggregate where needed and building edges that resist washout.
GM Orion Assembly
General Motors' Orion Assembly plant, which builds small cars and EV pickup trucks, is in the township. Commercial and industrial lots near it see heavy truck traffic and need thicker sections at entrances and turning areas.
History
The township was established in 1835. Eames began as a railroad station in 1874, and Cole was a station on the Pontiac, Oxford and Northern Railroad. The Paint Creek Trail runs through the township toward Rochester.
Costs
National guides put new asphalt at roughly $5 to $12 or more per square foot and pothole repair at about $100 to $400. Long lake lanes cost more in total but less per square foot. Your written quote is the price.
Culverts
On rolling roads with ditches, many drives cross a culvert. A crushed pipe backs water against the approach. We check it at the estimate and include it in the quote if it needs replacing.
Timing
We pave from late spring through early fall and seal cracks in late summer and fall.
Lake Orion village
The Village of Lake Orion sits inside the township; see our separate Lake Orion page for the village.
Subdivisions between the lakes
Newer subdivisions fill much of the land between lakes. Their drives are mostly in good shape and need fall crack sealing and a sealcoat every few years. If cracks appear early in the tire paths, the base may be thin; we tell you whether repairs will hold.
Snow and shade
Wooded lots and north-facing slopes hold snow and ice longer. Those drives benefit most from good drainage and sealed cracks.
What a quote includes
Removal, base depth, asphalt thickness, approach and culvert work, each priced.
Eames and Cole
Older settlements like Eames, a railroad station from 1874, and Cole, on the old Pontiac, Oxford and Northern line, have older homes with narrower drives. We plan those jobs around tighter access.

Orion Township Questions
How do you handle a steep lake driveway?
Shed water along the way, support the edges, and plan the bottom so the approach does not take all the runoff.
Can you pave my gravel lake lane?
Yes, reusing firm stone and building edges that resist washout.
Do you work on industrial lots?
Yes, with thicker sections where trucks turn and load.
How do you protect the lake during sealcoating?
Materials stay on the drive, drains are protected, and we clean up dry.
Can you replace my culvert?
Yes, as part of approach work, with the road agency's requirements in mind.
Do you serve the village too?
Yes. The Village of Lake Orion has its own page.
Is my newer drive cracking because of a thin base?
Possibly. Early cracking in the tire paths is a common sign. We check at the estimate.
Do north-facing drives need extra care?
They hold ice longer, so drainage and crack sealing matter more.
Do you work on older homes in the township?
Yes, with access planned around narrower drives.
Do you work near the GM plant?
Yes, on commercial and industrial lots, with thicker sections where trucks turn and load.
